Reflexology Massage applies pressure to areas (points) on the feet, hands and ears. The basic principle of reflexology is these points correspond to organs and systems of the body. Pressure applied to these areas affects the organs and benefits the person’s health.
For over 3,000 years Chinese practitioners have used reflexology for a number of conditions by re-balancing Qi (the life force flowing through energy channels). The feet have over 7,000 nerve endings and these nerves are pathways connecting to every organ in the body through the central nervous system. Blockages of energy in these pathways will inhibit the flow of healing energy, also known as ‘chi,’ causing the accumulation of negative energy, resulting in pain or disease. Releasing the blockage, will allow the flow of energy and allow the body to heal itself. Reflexology can work alongside conventional medical medicine to assist healing and improve well being and vitality.
In a reflexology massage session the therapist will work all areas of the foot with gentle pressure. Their focus will be on the points that have pathways corresponding to ailments. The application of pressure sends a message from the peripheral nerves in feet to the central nervous system, which in turn signals the body to adjust the tension level. This brings internal organs and their systems into a state of optimum functioning, and increases blood supply (which brings additional oxygen and nutrients to cells and enhances waste removal).
Reflexologists may use foot charts to guide them as they apply pressure to specific areas. They may also use items, such as rubber balls, rubber bands and sticks of wood, to assist in their work. Reflexology is studied and used in combination with other treatments by chiropractors, physical therapists and massage therapists. Reflexology massage is generally comfortable and relaxing, although points that are congested may need vigorous pressure may cause discomfort for some people.
Reflexology sessions usually last 30 to 60 minutes depending on the clients goals and body conditions. For these sessions you will remain dressed and may be seated in a chair or on a massage table.
